UNITED STATES OF AMERICA OFFERS NIGERIA N2.9 BILLION AGRIC ASSISTANCE

The Charge d’ Affairs of United States in Nigeria, Mrs. Lisa Piascek has disclosed during a courtesy visit to Dr. Sayyadi Ruma, the Minister of Agriculture and Water Resources in Abuja recently that the United States Government will provide agricultural development assistance worth $25 million (about N2.9 billion) to Nigeria. Piascek stated that this amount was part of N90.7 billion (about $770 million) provided by the U.S. Government as its contribution to the Global Food Crisis Fund.

In his response, Ruma informed his guest that Federal Government has concluded plans to increase the country storage capacity to over 700,000 tones by the first quarter of 2009 and also urged the U.S. to avail Nigeria of its expertise in the areas of processing and storage of agricultural products.
