Lack of Expertise Stalls Rice Productivity

The Federal Government has blamed lack of requisite knowledge on the production of stone free and high quality rice saying that this was responsible for the continued importation of foreign brands of the commodity into the country. The Executive Director, National Cereal Research Institute, Badeggi, Niger State, Dr Anthony Ochigbo disclosed this during a rice training workshop in Ibadan.

Dr. Ochigbo said that his institute would embark on production of high quality rice in sufficient quantity to end the regime of importation. He also noted that Federal Government had released N18 million to the institute for establishment of small and medium rice processing industries

Dr Ochigbo stated that the workshop was designed for training small and medium rice processors on how to process high quality rice to handle rice crisis. He also called on the Federal and State Governments to collaborate in order to arrest the problem of shortage of inputs in the rice industry.
